B'nai B'rith honors Esther Wertheimer

Boca Raton News
April 28, 1997

Correspondence from exotic destinations is routine for Esther Wertheimer, a sculptor whose bold, bronze works are popular in all time zones and hemispheres - including her primary residence of Boca Raton.

She is a national treasure in her adopted homeland of Canada, and many cities in the Far East would gladly call her one of their own. So it's not surprising the B'nai B'rith Foundation of the United States honored her this spring with the 1997 International Arts Award. B'nai B'rith Focus Unit 5504 elegantly presented the award at a black-tie dinner dance at the Boca Raton Marriott Hotel.

Sid Closter, trustee of the B'nai B'rith Foundation of the United States, presented the award recognizing Wertheimer's international artistic achievements - which are considerable: two exhibits recently in Japan (Tokyo and Nagoya), with future ones planned, for Seoul, Talpei and Japan. In April, Wertheimer is a featured lecturer in Singapore, another popular market for her works.

President Bill Clinton is among U.S. dignitaries who wrote glowing letters of acknowledgment for Wertheimer's B'nai B'rith Award: "Sculpture challenges us to explore our boundaries and to celebrate our diversity, uniting people in a common expression of humanity. You can be proud of your work to advance this legacy. Your striking bronze sculptures, full of energy and life, have enriched our culture and delighted art lovers around the world."

She received similar praises from Vice President Al Gore, U.S. Rep. Robert Wexler and Gov. Lawton Chiles.

Jan McArt was honorary chair of the event; Marleen Forkas served as general chair; Betty Pepper was co-chair; Hope Tepper served as host chair; and Co-hosts for Focus Unit 5504 were Arlene Dorin and Naomi Tandet.

Their committee included Dr. Ealeen Abelle, Adelaide Altman, Gloria Bork, Robert Eisenberg, Eileen Fass, Helen Kushner, Howard Ryals, Arthur Sondak, and Merlie Winnick. B'nai B'rith District Five was represented by executive director Michele Sheppard.
